Mahamrityunjaya Jaap

The Mrityunjaya mantra, the maha-mantra of Shiv upasana, chanted to a disciplined sankhya by lineage-trained pandits, held for the one the household prays to be shielded, healed and kept.

Mahamrityunjaya Jaap

Overview

What is this anushthan?

Mahamrityunjaya Jaap is the anushthan of the Mrityunjaya mantra, the mantra the parampara holds among the greatest of the Shiv worships, chanted for arogya, for raksha, and for the aayu and well-being of one the household holds dear. It is offered when a family seeks shelter for a member through illness or a difficult passage, when an astrologer has advised the anushthan as a remedial measure, and in the seasons closest to Mahadev. The parampara holds Mahadev to be Ashutosh, the swiftly pleased, and Mrityunjaya, the conqueror of death, and it teaches his grace the surest refuge in this age. Unlike a single pujan, a jaap is a discipline bound to a number. At sankalp the family fixes a sankhya, the count of japa the anushthan is vowed to complete, and the rite is not finished until that count is met. The mantra is chanted on a rudraksha mala, the pandit seated with bhasma marked on the brow, the recitation held unbroken to the sankhya, and the anushthan sealed by the dashansh hawan. The classical count is the sawa lakh, one lakh twenty five thousand japa. At SiddhiStar the anushthan is performed by lineage-trained pandits in the shastriya krama, with your name and gotra carried into the sankalp. The count is chosen at booking, and where a devotee wishes to do more, the parampara allows the anushthan to be raised to a sawa lakh. The rite is sealed by the dashansh hawan, and where hawan cannot be arranged, additional jap is completed in its place.
SiddhiStar Note
“The mantra prays in the oldest image the tradition keeps: that as the ripe cucumber loosens of itself from the vine, easily and in its own time, so may the one we love be loosened from the grip of untimely death, and not from life's sweetness. The parampara does not chant it as a spell against fate. It chants it as a household stands watch, the mala turning through the night beside someone who is unwell, the count kept, the name held, the grace asked. That is what a Mahamrityunjaya anushthan is: a vigil given the form of a rite.”
