Where Does This Puja Come From?
Ritual Flow

Sankalpa
Devotee declares gotra, birth nakshatra, specific Shani period (Sade Sati, Dasha, or Dosha), and the life area being affected.
Ganapati Puja
Ganesha invoked first.
Shani Avahana
Shani invoked in his traditional form - dark blue or black, carried on a crow (his vahana), holding a bow and arrow.
Shani Tailabhisheka
Sesame oil abhisheka of the Shani murti or image - the most distinctive step. The oil is offered with specific Shani mantras. Black sesame seeds are added to the oil.
Shani Shodashopachara
Sixteen-step worship with blue/black flowers, sesame seeds, iron items (Shani's metal), and blue cloth.
Shani Mantra Jaap (23,000 times or 108 times)
Om Sham Shanaishcharaya Namah - either the abbreviated (108 jaap) or the full prescribed count (23,000 in one session or distributed). Count depends on the severity of the dosha.
Shani Stotra Parayana
Shani Stotra recitation - the traditional prayers to Saturn praising his nature as the just judge.
Dakshina in Black
Shani's dakshina is traditionally given in black items - black sesame, black urad dal, black cloth, and iron. This is his prescribed offering and is part of the ceremony.
