Mahalakshmi Puja

The complete upasana of Lakshmi in her cosmic Mahalakshmi form - worshipping the goddess across her eight aspects of abundance through the Ashtalakshmi framework, the Mahalakshmi Ashtakam, and an extended offering sequence.

Mahalakshmi Puja

Overview

What Is This Puja?

The Lakshmi Tantra, one of the Pancharatra Agama's most sophisticated texts, does not describe Lakshmi as a deity of wealth in the narrow sense. It describes her as the Chit-Shakti - the consciousness-power of Vishnu himself. Without her, Vishnu neither perceives nor acts. She is not his consort in the way a human wife is a consort - she is the very capacity by which the divine operates in the created world. Mahalakshmi Puja works with this understanding. The Ashtalakshmi framework - eight forms of the goddess, each presiding over a different domain of existence: primordial abundance (Adi Lakshmi), material wealth (Dhana Lakshmi), agricultural abundance and food (Dhanya Lakshmi), animal wealth and strength (Gaja Lakshmi), progeny (Santana Lakshmi), victory and courage (Vijaya Lakshmi), wisdom and learning (Vidya Lakshmi), and sovereign power (Rajya Lakshmi) - makes explicit that the goddess's grace is not monolithic. A family may be experiencing abundance in one domain and scarcity in another. The Ashtalakshmi invocation addresses all eight simultaneously. The Mahalakshmi Ashtakam - eight stanzas from the Padma Purana attributed to Indra - is the ceremony's central devotional text. Each stanza addresses one form of the goddess with specific epithets and a specific request. This is not a generic prayer; it is a systematic engagement with each aspect of divine abundance.
SiddhiStar Note
"Families often ask whether they should do Lakshmi Puja or Mahalakshmi Puja. My response is: what is the intention? If you are performing the Diwali puja or maintaining the Friday vrat, Lakshmi Puja is correct. If you are seeking a comprehensive re-alignment of the household's relationship with abundance across all its dimensions - health, progeny, food, wealth, learning, and authority - the Mahalakshmi Puja's Ashtalakshmi framework addresses this comprehensively. The two are not competing optio

Ritual Flow

Understanding the sequence helps you participate meaningfully rather than merely observe.

1

Sankalpa

Householder and spouse declare intent. The Sankalpa for Mahalakshmi Puja names the specific aspect of abundance being primarily sought - and states that the worship is being offered to Mahalakshmi in her eight-form expression. This specificity is what differentiates the Mahalakshmi Puja Sankalpa from the regular Lakshmi Puja Sankalpa.

2

Kalash Sthapana and Punyahavachana

Full Punyahavachana performed. The kalash for this puja is dressed in a red cloth - Mahalakshmi's colour - and a lotus placed on the coconut at the mouth. The space purification with Varun mantras is performed in all eight directions, corresponding to the eight forms of the goddess.

3

Ganapati Puja and Gauri Puja

Ganesha and Gauri both worshipped as the prerequisite pair. In the Mahalakshmi tradition, Gauri is present as the witnessing principle - the shakti of Shiva acknowledging the shakti of Vishnu. This dual preliminary worship is specific to the Mahalakshmi Puja tradition.

4

Mahalakshmi Avahana - Eight-Direction Invocation

Mahalakshmi formally invited through a specific Avahana that invokes each of the eight forms from their respective directions. This eight-direction invocation is the Mahalakshmi Puja's signature step - it maps the Ashtalakshmi onto the physical space of the home.

5

Panchamrit Abhisheka

Extended five-round abhisheka. In the Mahalakshmi tradition, each of the five Panchamrit substances is offered with a different epithet of the goddess - milk for Adi Lakshmi, curd for Dhanya Lakshmi, honey for Santana Lakshmi, ghee for Vijaya Lakshmi, sugar for Dhana Lakshmi. The remaining three forms receive Gangajal bath.

6

Sri Sukta Recitation

The complete Sri Sukta recited by the purohit with individual flower offerings at each mantra. Sri Sukta serves as the Vedic foundation within the broader Mahalakshmi Puja framework.

7

Mahalakshmi Ashtakam - with Ashtalakshmi Specific Offerings

The Mahalakshmi Ashtakam (8 stanzas from the Padma Purana) recited with a specific offering for each stanza corresponding to each form: lotus for Adi Lakshmi, gold/coins for Dhana Lakshmi, grain for Dhanya Lakshmi, fruits for Gaja Lakshmi, flowers for Santana Lakshmi, sindoor for Vijaya Lakshmi, books for Vidya Lakshmi, and red cloth for Rajya Lakshmi.

8

Lakshmi Sahasranama (abbreviated) or full recitation

Selection of 108 names from the Lakshmi Sahasranama (Devi Bhagavata Skandha 9) recited with individual akshata offerings. The full Sahasranama adds approximately 45 minutes to the ceremony; the 108-name abbreviated version is the default.

9

Aarti and Mangalacharana

Five-wick Aarti performed. The Mahalakshmi Aarti from the North Indian tradition recited. Kheer and sweets distributed as prasad. If this is the Sharad Purnima observance, an all-night lamp is lit and placed before the murti.

Understanding the sequence helps you participate meaningfully rather than merely observe.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why would I choose Mahalakshmi Puja over the regular Lakshmi Puja?
The regular Lakshmi Puja (SKU 13) is the household prosperity worship - Sri Sukta based, performed on Diwali and Fridays, focused on material and familial abundance. Mahalakshmi Puja addresses the same goddess in her eight-form cosmic expression, systematically invoking each aspect of abundance - material, agricultural, progeny, victory, learning, and sovereignty - through the Ashtalakshmi framework. If your household has experienced simultaneous difficulty across multiple domains, or if you are seeking a comprehensive annual abundance ceremony rather than a focused one, Mahalakshmi Puja is the appropriate choice.
