Where Does This Puja Come From?
Ritual Flow
Understanding the sequence helps you participate meaningfully rather than merely observe.
Sankalpa
Householder and spouse declare intent. The Sankalpa for Mahalakshmi Puja names the specific aspect of abundance being primarily sought - and states that the worship is being offered to Mahalakshmi in her eight-form expression. This specificity is what differentiates the Mahalakshmi Puja Sankalpa from the regular Lakshmi Puja Sankalpa.
Kalash Sthapana and Punyahavachana
Full Punyahavachana performed. The kalash for this puja is dressed in a red cloth - Mahalakshmi's colour - and a lotus placed on the coconut at the mouth. The space purification with Varun mantras is performed in all eight directions, corresponding to the eight forms of the goddess.
Ganapati Puja and Gauri Puja
Ganesha and Gauri both worshipped as the prerequisite pair. In the Mahalakshmi tradition, Gauri is present as the witnessing principle - the shakti of Shiva acknowledging the shakti of Vishnu. This dual preliminary worship is specific to the Mahalakshmi Puja tradition.
Mahalakshmi Avahana - Eight-Direction Invocation
Mahalakshmi formally invited through a specific Avahana that invokes each of the eight forms from their respective directions. This eight-direction invocation is the Mahalakshmi Puja's signature step - it maps the Ashtalakshmi onto the physical space of the home.
Panchamrit Abhisheka
Extended five-round abhisheka. In the Mahalakshmi tradition, each of the five Panchamrit substances is offered with a different epithet of the goddess - milk for Adi Lakshmi, curd for Dhanya Lakshmi, honey for Santana Lakshmi, ghee for Vijaya Lakshmi, sugar for Dhana Lakshmi. The remaining three forms receive Gangajal bath.
Sri Sukta Recitation
The complete Sri Sukta recited by the purohit with individual flower offerings at each mantra. Sri Sukta serves as the Vedic foundation within the broader Mahalakshmi Puja framework.
Mahalakshmi Ashtakam - with Ashtalakshmi Specific Offerings
The Mahalakshmi Ashtakam (8 stanzas from the Padma Purana) recited with a specific offering for each stanza corresponding to each form: lotus for Adi Lakshmi, gold/coins for Dhana Lakshmi, grain for Dhanya Lakshmi, fruits for Gaja Lakshmi, flowers for Santana Lakshmi, sindoor for Vijaya Lakshmi, books for Vidya Lakshmi, and red cloth for Rajya Lakshmi.
Lakshmi Sahasranama (abbreviated) or full recitation
Selection of 108 names from the Lakshmi Sahasranama (Devi Bhagavata Skandha 9) recited with individual akshata offerings. The full Sahasranama adds approximately 45 minutes to the ceremony; the 108-name abbreviated version is the default.
Aarti and Mangalacharana
Five-wick Aarti performed. The Mahalakshmi Aarti from the North Indian tradition recited. Kheer and sweets distributed as prasad. If this is the Sharad Purnima observance, an all-night lamp is lit and placed before the murti.
