Sankalp Mantra in Puja: What It Means When Your Name and Gotra Are Spoken

During the first Prahar of the Mahashivratri Mahapuja at Narwar Dham, before the first drop of water touched the Shivalinga, the pandit sat and started speaking. What came out of his mouth was a list of names.

Each name was accompanied by a gotra - the ancestral lineage. The gotra meaning is precisely this: the rishi whose lineage your family traces itself back to, named explicitly so that the cosmic record knows who is asking. Each name was accompanied by a city. Each name by a kamna - the specific intention. The full Sankalp mantra was being spoken, person by person.

Families from Gurgaon. Dwarka. Noida. The Netherlands. California. All heard their names spoken at Narwar Dham, in Sanskrit, before Shiva, in the present moment.

This is the Sankalp mantra - and understanding it changes how you experience every ritual.

What the Sankalp Mantra Is Doing

The Sankalp mantra is not a registration system. It is the ritual act of bringing a specific human life into the presence of a specific divine consciousness. The pandit declares, before God, that this person - with this lineage, from this place, carrying this intention - is here.

The Vedic tradition holds that the moment the Sankalp mantra is spoken, the puja becomes specific. It belongs to you. The punya flows to you because your name and gotra, your desh and your kamna were all present.

Why Gotra Matters - The Gotra Meaning in Puja

The gotra meaning in Vedic context is your patrilineal rishi-lineage. Bharadwaj. Kashyap. Vasishth. Atri. When the Sankalp speaks your gotra, it places you within the cosmic genealogy that the rishis themselves established.

This is why a SiddhiStar pandit asks for your gotra at booking. Not as a formality. As the actual address that the cosmic message will travel to.

The Pandit Said Something During That Ceremony

In the middle of the Sankalp, the pandit addressed the SiddhiStar viewers directly: those who hear their names spoken become beneficiaries of the punya. Those connected to SiddhiStar - all of them are being prayed for. Their health. Their happiness. Their engagement with life.

This is the Mass Online Pooja. Not a recording. A live ceremony where your name is spoken from first Sankalp mantra to final Kshama Prarthana.

What This Means in a Private Pooja

In an individual SiddhiStar pooja, the Sankalp mantra is taken for your family alone. One pandit. One family. One Sankalp containing your name, gotra, exact cosmic time, city, and specific intention.

How to Take Sankalp at Home - The Basic Vidhi

If you are doing a puja vidhi at home, the basic Sankalp structure is: name, gotra, place, tithi (lunar day), nakshatra (constellation), and kaam. The pandit speaks this in Sanskrit; if you do not know Sanskrit, your pandit speaks it on your behalf.

For Shiva-specific ceremonies, this same Sankalp opens the shivling puja vidhi before the abhishek begins.

Book an Individual Online Pooja from Narwar Dham. Your name. Your gotra. Your intention. Spoken live before God.
